Truck and trailers drop off garbage and waste at the Flathead County Landfill

Plastic, It’s Everywhere

Many of us live in Flathead County because we love this place. We love the water, the land, and the views. But plastic waste poses a threat to the long-term sustainability of living in Flathead County.

Since it’s development in the 1950’s, 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced and most of that ends up as trash, according to an article by the National Geographic Society.

Plastic, it’s everywhere and in everything. And as consumers, the decisions we make affect the area where we live. In 2018 alone, 144,211 tons of waste was disposed of at the Flathead County Landfill, an increase of almost 24% compared to 2017.

So what can you do?

Single-use plastics, such as straws, water bottles, and grocery bags, are a leading culprits for plastic waste. We can all show our love for Flathead County by voluntarily opting to reduce our plastic use. Here’s how:

  1. Use those reusable grocery bags

2. Request no straws in your drinks from restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.

3. Buy local and avoid plastic packaging from shipping

4. Buy in-season, bulk produce that’s not packaged in plastic

5. Bring your own water battle and refill it
